What is gastritis? Gastritis is an inflammation, irritation or erosion of the coating the stomach. It can occur suddenly (acute) or gradually (chronic). What causes gastritis? Gastritis can be caused by irritation due to overuse alcohol, chronic vomiting, stress or use of certain medications such as aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory. What are the symptoms of gastritis? The symptoms of gastritis vary among individuals, and many people no symptoms. And smoking, which relaxes the LES and stimulates stomach acid, is a major contributor.
